Are you considering a kitchen or bathroom renovation? Are granite countertops at the top of your list? The simple addition of granite can transform your home, adding instant style and sophistication to any space.
At C&C Stonework, we understand that new granite countertops are a significant investment, and you want to do your homework first. Before you take the next step, we’ll address some frequently asked questions about granite countertops, dispelling myths, correcting misconceptions, and explaining why granite is one of our go-to materials for home interiors.
Where does granite come from?
Granite is mined from the earth in quarries, which can be found worldwide. Raw granite is very rough; it must be processed after it’s mined. A special milling machine cuts and polishes the granite, so it shines. When that process is complete, the final slabs, typically seven to nine feet long, are ready for display. Once a customer selects a slab, a fabrication specialist can cut it to the exact size needed for a kitchen or bathroom countertop.
It looks like there are cracks. Are they a sign of weakness, or will they cause the slab to break?
This question is one we hear frequently, and the simple answer is “no”.
Granite is a natural stone composed of minerals and rocks, including quartz, feldspar, and mica, among others. Combined, these create a strong, durable material; however, fissures (tiny, hairline separations) can form during the initial underground formation.
How does this happen? As these minerals undergo continuous cycles of heating and cooling, the expansion and contraction that occur can cause natural imperfections to appear in the stone.
However, while they might look similar, fissures are not cracks and will not weaken the stone at all. Cracks are caused by accidents that occur as the granite travels from the quarry to your home, across the handling, fabrication, or transportation stages.
Since granite is so strong, can I cut directly on it?
Although it may not hurt the granite, we don’t recommend cutting directly on it. You need to remember that, although granite is extremely strong, it can still chip or break. However, this usually only occurs as a result of extreme abuse. For example, if you place something extremely heavy on your counter’s overhang, the pressure alone could cause it to break. Granite can also chip if it rubs too forcefully against stationary objects, such as appliances, during the installation process.
Is it possible to scorch granite?
The answer is “yes,” anything is possible. Your kitchen is full of sharp tools and hot appliances. If you follow proper precautions and take care not to leave scalding hot items on the stone for too long, you can avoid scorching the countertops. It is always a good idea to use a trivet, regardless of the type of countertop material you choose.
Although granite is a naturally heat-resistant stone, sealants and finishes are more susceptible to heat damage. If you repeatedly leave hot items on your counter, it can create black marks on the surface. Extreme heat can even wear through the sealant itself, making the granite more vulnerable to stains and damage.
Can you find granite that looks like marble?
Although marble is beautiful, it is no match for granite. In other words, you won’t find granite that looks and behaves like marble – and that’s not a bad thing!
Granite and marble have very different compositions. Granite has a more flecked, granular appearance, whereas oversized veins characterize marble. In addition, although both materials are gorgeous natural stones, granite offers several benefits over marble, including being harder, more durable and heat-resistant, less likely to scratch, scuff, or discolor, and finally, granite is less porous.
While marble is a beautiful choice for low-traffic areas, such as fireplace surrounds, it may lack the durability required to withstand the wear and tear of everyday kitchen use.
Will granite countertops help the resale value of my home?
Yes! Granite is an excellent choice to increase the value of your home. This one-time investment can last a lifetime, making it a versatile and flexible addition to your home. And, compared to other surfaces, it can be more economical, delivering an impressive return on investment that you will enjoy and appreciate for years to come.
And lastly, what is the process for ordering and installing a new granite countertop?
When you work with a professional installation team like C&C Stoneworks, the process begins with digital measurements, and a template is created to ensure the correct dimensions for your space. Once that is complete, the template is used to shape the stone for your kitchen or bathroom. When the countertop is ready, our team will schedule your installation.
